Robben proud of Dutch display

Goalscoring hero Arjen Robben heaped praise on his Netherlands team-mates after they stunned FIFA World Cup holders Spain on Friday.

Robben scored two goals in the second half as the Netherlands came from behind to trounce Spain 5-1 in Group B at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

The Bayern Munich speedster was at his blistering best against the defending champions but he preferred to congratulate the team, who gained some revenge for their 2010 World Cup final defeat.

It s a fantastic feeling to have scored those goals, Robben told FIFA.com after netting his seventh goal in his last seven international appearances for Louis van Gaal s side.

I have to say, I m just so proud of my team. It s always nice to score a couple of goals but I m far prouder of th…

Previewing the Manchester Derby in the FA Community Shield

Next Sunday, 7 August 2011, bitter rivals Manchester United and Manchester City face-off in the English FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The last time these sides met was on 16 April 2011 in the semifinal of the FA Cup. On that day, City knocked United out of the competition with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Yaya Toure goal in the 52nd minute.

United s noisy neighbours went on to defeat Stoke City 1-0  in the final en route to their first major trophy since they won the League Cup in 1976. After City s historic triumph, Manchester United were forced to take down the Stretford End s infamous banner at Old Trafford which showed the number of years Manchester City had gone without winning a trophy.

Saying that the August 7th…

Gundogan: Even Ibrahimovic admits Guardiola is the best

New Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan is already courting the favour of his new club s fans as he stokes the flames of their intense rivalry with neighbours United.

City unveiled Gundogan alongside fellow new man Nolito on Saturday, as cross-town rivals United announced the capture of Zlatan Ibrahimovic a man who has made his dislike for new City manager Pep Guardiola no secret and is an open admirer of new United manager Jose Mourinho.

Ibrahimovic was scathing of Guardiola in his autobiography released in 2013 and has had plenty to say about his former Barcelona manager since, but Gundogan said even in his scathing attacks, the former Sweden international has admitted that Guardiola is the best coach in the world.

Even the players who don t like him [rate him…

Wagner leaves Bayern for Tianjin Teda

Forward Sandro Wagner has left Bayern Munich to join Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

The 31-year-old joined Bayern from Hoffenheim in a €13million move in December 2017 and scored eight goals as they won the Bundesliga title last season.

However, Wagner, firmly second choice behind Robert Lewandowski, started just one league game this term and failed to find the net in the competition.

Wagner will now link up with Tianjin, where he has reportedly been offered a lucrative two-year deal following a €5m transfer.

He is set to join compatriot and former Hertha Berlin team-mate Felix Bastians, while German coach Uli Stielike is in charge at the Chinese club.

Klopp: Officials knew they made a mistake

Jurgen Klopp felt the officials during Liverpool s 1-1 Premier League draw at West Ham tried to make up for a poor error in the first half.

Liverpool s opening goal at London Stadium on Monday, converted by Sadio Mane, should have been disallowed for an offside against James Milner in the build-up.

Michail Antonio equalised within six minutes but Liverpool almost snatched a controversial late winner, substitute Divock Origi firing at Lukasz Fabianski in added time with the offside flag again wrongly staying down.

Klopp was clearly frustrated at the full-time whistle and had animated discussions with both West Ham counterpart Manuel Pellegrini and the match officials, led by referee Kevin Friend, before heading down the tunnel.

And Klopp intimated he fe…

Chilwell to miss World Cup due to ´significant´ injury, Chelsea confirm

Ben Chilwell is expected to miss England s World Cup campaign after sustaining a significant hamstring injury, Chelsea have confirmed.

Chilwell limped out of the Blues 2-1 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday, leaving head coach Graham Potter concerned.

Potter said the injury represented a blow for Chelsea, adding: Fingers crossed, when we get it scanned it isn t as bad, it can be not as severe, but clearly we are disappointed.

Chilwell s England team-mate Mason Mount said it was tough to watch the left-back suffer the injury less than three weeks before the World Cup gets under way, and Gareth Southgate s fears have been realised with the news that his hamstring problem is significant .

A statement released by Chelsea on Saturday read: F…

Man United won’t meet Dortmund’s Sancho demands

Manchester United will not pay as much as Borussia Dortmund demand for the services of Jadon Sancho, according to .

United are one of the top clubs across Europe which have been closely monitoring the winger and his situation in Germany his quality performances on the attacking flank for the Bundesliga runners-up have attracted the eyes of many. Liverpool were another, but manager Jurgen Klopp downplayed those rumours severely a few days ago. Reports of interest from Real Madrid have also become rarer than before.

Dortmund have made it clear, on more than one occasion, that they have no intention of agreeing any cut-price deals for their players, despite the financial implications of the Covid-19 crisis. And now, senior Man United officials have expressed a stance that …

Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic to keep calm during Old Firm clash with Rangers

Brendan Rodgers has called on his Celtic players to maintain cool heads when they run out at Ibrox for Sunday’s showdown with cinch Premiership title rivals Rangers.

The Hoops are a point above Gers, who have a game in hand, so the outcome of this weekend’s derby is likely to have a significant bearing on the outcome of what is shaping up as the tightest championship race since the Light Blues’ financial implosion more than a decade ago.

However, Rodgers has told his players to focus fully on playing football and not the potential ramifications of victory or defeat.

Brendan Rodgers spoke to the media at Lennoxtown today to preview this Sunday s Glasgow Derby.

Mauricio Pochettino ‘frustrated’ to see Chelsea twice surrender lead

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was frustrated after seeing his side twice surrender the lead to draw 2-2 against bottom side Sheffield United.

Thiago Silva and Noni Madueke scored either side of the break to put Chelsea 2-1 up, with Jayden Bogle scoring for the Blades just after the half-hour mark.

Just when it looked as though Chelsea were on course to claim all three points, McBurnie struck in the third minute of stoppage time.

Pochettino said: “It is very frustrating because when you concede in the last few minutes you feel very disappointed and frustrated because you should win the game.

“We had the possession but didn’t create enough. I think in the first part of the season we were a little bit more solid. We were creating but we weren’t…
