United debt rises, revenue falls

Manchester United s debt has risen, while revenue for the second quarter of the financial year is down from 2013-14 s equivalent period.

The lack of European football at Manchester United this season is starting to bite, with revenue for the second quarter of the financial year down from the figure seen at the same stage in 2013-14.

United s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League or Europa League at the end of the previous campaign has had a knock-on effect to the club s finances, with debt also on the rise.

The level of debt now stands at £380.5 million, a 6.7 per cent increase from the same stage last year.

Commercial revenue has actually risen 9.7 per cent, from £42.3m to £46.4m, but overall revenue is down from £122.9m to £105.7m.

Yattara pens Lyon extension

Promising Lyon striker Mohamed Yattara has extended his deal at the Stade de Gerland until 2018.

The Guinea international is yet to make his debut for the Rhone club, but scored 14 goals on loan at Ligue 2 side Angers last term.

Yattara s existing deal was due to expire in 2016, but Lyon chiefs were keen to tie the 20-year-old down long-term.

He gained top-flight experience with a temporary spell at Troyes in the 2012-13 campaign, scoring three times in 23 appearances.

Yattara will now return to a Lyon side shorn of their most experienced striker after Bafetimbi Gomis moved to Swansea City on a Bosman transfer.

With pre-season training under way, Yattara will compete with fellow academy graduates Alexandre Lacazette and Yassine Benzia for a spot i…

Germany coach Loew summons Ballack for crisis talks

Michael Ballack s place in the German team was under threat on Wednesday after furious coach Joachim Loew summoned the Chelsea star to explain his public criticisms of the way the squad is being handled.

Loew is angry after Ballack criticised him in newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) in which he said the coach should show his senior players more respect and loyalty.

I will call Michael Ballack and insist on a meeting in Germany, Loew told the German Football Federation (DFB) website on Wednesday.

I am extremely disappointed by the manner and content of what he has said I cannot accept this. What happens after that, and the decision I make, will depend on this conversation.

Quite often in the past, we have asked Michael Ballack as captain …

Rob Page calls the backing from his players ‘powerful’ after Wales beat Latvia

Rob Page called the backing from his players “powerful” after Wales bounced back into Euro 2024 qualifying contention with a 2-0 victory in Latvia.

A penalty from skipper Aaron Ramsey – his 100th career goal – and a delicious David Brooks chip deep into stoppage time put Wales within three points of a top-two place and lifted the pressure on under-fire manager Page.

Group favourites Croatia’s 1-0 victory in Armenia was further good news for Wales, who had only won once in 13 games before arriving in Riga.

Ramsey and others had backed Page during the build-up to a game many saw as pivotal in the manager’s tenure.

Page said of the players’ support: “It feels good, it feels powerful, absolutely – that’s a massive compliment to myself from…

Oscar confident ahead of new Chelsea season

Chelsea midfielder Oscar is confident he and his club will have improved fortunes ahead of the new Premier League season.

The 2015-16 campaign was nothing short of a nightmare for the London club, as the then-defending champions slumped to a 10th-place finish as Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties and the team missed out on Champions League football in 2016-17.

But Oscar is positive Chelsea have made the right changes to get back on track under new head coach Antonio Conte, while some positive pre-season performances have only increased the Brazilian s confidence.

Conte has tinkered with a number of tactical systems, but Oscar feels most comfortable in a 4-3-3.

I think we have played better with the 4-3-3 than when we have played 4-2-4, but we have …

Sevilla coach Montella interested in Italy job

Vincenzo Montella has hinted he would be interested in becoming the new Italy national team coach.

Montella, whose Sevilla side knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League last week, was not named on the three-man shortlist revealed by Italian Football Federation (FIGC) vice-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta.

Chelsea s Antonio Conte is Costacurta s top target, with interim coach Luigi Di Biagio and Zenit s Roberto Mancini also in the running.

Di Biagio is taking charge of Italy s upcoming friendly matches against Argentina and England, stepping up from his role as Under-21 coach.

Regardless of not being mentioned by Costacurta, former Italy international Montella has indicated he would find the job hard to turn down if he was offered the c…

Suarez not for sale, insist Liverpool

Liverpool have insisted Luis Suarez will stay at the club despite comments from the striker indicating he is ready to leave.

The former Ajax forward has caused much controversy since his move to Merseyside, and sparked further outrage by biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League match in April.

Suarez was banned by the FA for 10 matches following the incident and this week indicated that he wants a transfer, with the media attention surrounding him and his family the primary reason for his decision.
However, the Anfield outfit stressed they are not looking to sell the Uruguay international, adding that Suarez has not informed the club of his wish to leave.
A Liverpool spokesperson said: Luis Suarez is not for sale. Neither Luis or his representatives …

Scholes: ´I am scared for United´

Former midfielder Paul Scholes said he fears Manchester United could spiral into obscurity if they do not arrest their decline.

After romping home to win the 2012-13 Premier League title, United uncharacteristically finished seventh last season, with manager David Moyes losing his job as a result.

Dutchman Louis van Gaal has since taken charge of first-team affairs but old habits were evident at Old Trafford as United lost their Premier League opener 2-1 to Swansea City.

And Scholes an 11-time Premier League winner with the club believes United could continue to decline just like arch-rivals Liverpool did in the 1990s, having claimed the 1989-90 top-flight title before managing to earn just four runner-up medals in 24 seasons since.

Liverpool also finishe…

SFA chief refuses to back Burley action

Scottish Football Association (SFA) chief executive Gordon Smith refused to back manager George Burley s decision to drop Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor for Wednesday s World Cup qualifier against Iceland here at Hampden Park, saying instead it would be reviewed.

Amid reports the Rangers duo had stayed up drinking into the early hours at the team hotel after the squad s return from a 3-0 defeat by Holland on Saturday, an SFA spokesman confirmed a breach of team discipline had taken place.

But although Ferguson and McGregor were left out of the starting line-up, several hours later the SFA announced they would be both on the bench for what is a must-win game for Scotland if they are to maintain realistic hopes of qualifying for next year s World Cup in South Africa.<…

Pohang, Kashima into AFC Champions League knockouts

South Korea s Pohang Steelers came from behind to book their place in the knockout rounds of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday, where they were joined by Japan s Kashima Antlers.

Pohang beat Australia s Central Coast Mariners 3-2 to line up alongside Japan s Kawasaki Frontale in the last 16 from Group H. Defending champions Gamba Osaka and Uzbek giants Pakhtakor are the other teams already through.

A Denilson hat-trick did the job for Pohang, with the winner coming a minute from time.

His early penalty sent the home side on their way, but Adam Kwasnik scored twice for the Mariners in four second-half minutes.

Denilson, though, struck twice more inside the last 19 minutes to crush Australian dreams.

The victory extinguished any faint hopes that …
