United States into Gold Cup semis after late winner against Jamaica

The United States dominated possession against Jamaica but had to wait until the closing minutes for the goal which secured a 1-0 win and sent them through to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals.

Matthew Hoppe scored for the first time on the international stage in the 83rd minute to seal victory at AT T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The USA move on to face Qatar in Thursday s semi-final in Austin. Earlier on Sunday, Canada defeated Costa Rica 2-0 to book a place in the other semi against Mexico.

Though it took some time for the young USA side to find the net, it was another encouraging result for head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Gakpo confirms Man Utd interest, but PSV forward trying to shut out the noise

Cody Gakpo has claimed Manchester United are a serious option as the transfer window draws to a close.

The window shuts on Thursday, with United set to be one of the busier clubs.

Erik ten Hag s side are reportedly closing in on the signing of Ajax forward Antony, which could see them splash out £85million (€100m) on the 22-year-old.

Gakpo has also been mentioned as a target, with the winger – who plays for Ajax s rivals PSV – possessing a similar style to Antony.

On Sunday, Gakpo provided a timely reminder of his quality with two assists and a goal in a 6-1 rout of Excelsior, and subsequently suggested United are still interested in his services.

PSG eye AC Milan’s Paqueta

Paris Saint-Germain have been part of the transfer rumour mills mostly for their biggest stars Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Mauro Icardi. Now that slowly becomes clear which of those players will stay and which will leave, it looks like the champions of France are looking elsewhere for more signings.

According to Sky Sport in Italy, PSG are eager to sign Lucas Paqueta from AC Milan. The Brazilian is only 22 years old and he joined Milan in January 2019, but just 12 months later there is a possibility for him to move to France. He has played a limited role for Milan this season and Rossoneri might be inclined to try and get the money they have spent on him, especially considering huge losses the club have made in recent years.

Frenkie de Jong keen to sustain Cruyff traditions at Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is relishing his chance to extend Barcelona s Dutch connection after arriving at Camp Nou.

The former Ajax midfielder was formally presented as a Barcelona player on Friday, and the 22-year-old is primed to be a key figure in the club s future.

Barca have close ties to Netherlands, largely because of their association with the late Dutch great Johan Cruyff, a superstar player and highly successful head coach of the Catalan club and Ajax.

The Cruyff traditions have sustained, and De Jong is sure he will fit in at Barcelona because of that factor.

He said: Netherlands and Barca have always had a good connection, and Barca and Ajax have a very similar way of playing, with the philosophy of Johan Cruyff. Ajax and Barca want to play in the same…

Prediction: Burnley vs Manchester United

Burnley

Starting with the hosts, while they might have gone about it the hard way over the weekend, Burnley eventually managed to book their spot in the fourth-round of this year s FA Cup. Needing a last-gasp equalizer before knocking League One outfit MK Dons out on penalties at Turf Moor, the Clarets did largely impress with their festive run. Really managing to ease their relegation worries as they opened the New Year, Sean Dyche s men now find themselves holding a five-point buffer from dropping into the bottom-three. With it appearing that their controversial 1-0 loss against Leeds last month…

Dimitri Payet pulled one back for Marseille in the 89th minute, but PSG held on to claim a deserved win.

Zenit´s Arshavin ´keen on Madrid move´

Zenit St Petersburg star Andrei Arshavin said he would love to join Real Madrid, which is reportedly keen to sign him, if his club will let him go.

How could I not want to go to Real Madrid, it s a great team, one of the best, Arshavin told the AS sports newspaper published on Wednesday.

The only thing that I have said is that I want to leave Zenit next year at all costs and I think by the start of 2009 I will definitely be with another team.

I have not come out in favour of another club. The most important thing now is not whether Real Madrid wants me or not, but rather if Zenit will let me leave, said the striker, one of the revelations of Euro 2008.

AS said on Tuesday that Real want to sign the Russian on a six-month loan from January.

Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins describes Gareth Bale s current form as unplayable .

The Spurs winger has scored eight goals in his last six games, with a number of outstanding strikes leading to comparisons with the world s best players as he guides Andre Villas-Boas side towards Champions League qualification.

Although Wilkins is in awe of the 23-year-old s recent performances, he argues that Bale has to maintain his sensational run for seasons to come in order to be considered one of the world s best players starting against Arsenal on Sunday.

Alcacer´s heart was at Barca – Valencia president

Valencia president Chan Lay Hoon believes forward Paco Alcacer had his heart set on Barcelona before his move to the LaLiga champions.

Alcacer, 23, completed a move to Barca on Tuesday, leaving his boyhood club in a deal that cost an initial €30million.

Chan was saddened by Alcacer s decision to leave the Mestalla, but said Valencia had little choice but to allow the Spain international to depart.

He was an icon, a symbol and had been with us since he was 11, she said.

But if someone who is an icon has his heart elsewhere, it makes no sense to turn them into an icon.

Alcacer scored 13 league goals for Valencia last season and 11 in 2014-15, leading to interest from elsewhere.

Chan said the club s intention was to keep Alcacer, who has…
